Andre and Juliette Cote of Sanford, Maine have been presented with the 17th Annual Bishop Amedee Proulx Award by Catholic Charities Maine and Bishop Malone. The Proulx Award is given for outstanding volunteer service to the parish and/or the community. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated the mission of Catholic Charities Maine and the social teachings of Jesus Christ.

Irene Cote Single, a daughter of Andre and Juliette, reflected on her parents’ acts of kindness and service to the community in their nomination letter. Irene wrote, “They were married on September 4, 1954 and over the course of the next several years, they brought ten children into the world. Both Dad and Mom came from large families. Dad being the eldest of fourteen and Mom the tenth of nineteen. From their young years, they both sacrificed a great deal of their life helping parents and siblings. They taught us children how to share, pray, help neighbors, and have faith in God and His son, Jesus.”

Andre Cote, a Knights of Columbus member and church usher of 35 years has been actively engaged in the community and has devoted much of his life to serving others. He served as president of St. Jean de-Baptiste, now known as Catholic Family Life. “Dad helped neighbors, his siblings, and friends with yard work, cutting down trees, repairs, snow removal, and a multitude of other odd jobs”, described Irene.

Juliette Cote, a former member of the Ladies of St. Ann and a current member of the Daughters of Isabella, remains active in helping others in need. She has been involved in various charity projects and still today is volunteers in nursing homes. Juliette served the elderly by helping them with errands, driving them to appointments, and even taking them to Dairy Queen or out to lunch so they could get out of the house. Andre and Juliette were both also members of the Life Line call list for their community. If an elderly neighbor was in need of assistance in the middle of the night, Andre and Juliette were there to help.

Andre and Juliette Cote have left a lasting impression in their community and their inspiring service to others has been outstanding. “As a family we are deeply indebted to our parents for showing us how to be disciples of Christ, although not perfect, we strive towards it each day,” Irene Cote wrote.

Notre Dame Commencement May 2010

"Wherever I’ve come across people suffering and dying, I’ve also found Catholic Charities right there standing alongside them, ministering and soothing, helping and healing, without regard for self. Every one of them a shining towering example of sacrifice and selflessness. Let’s make that what people think of when they think of the Catholic Church in America."

Catholic Charities Maine would like to pass along this alert from the FBI:
Haitian Earthquake Relief Fraud Alert

The FBI today reminds Internet users who receive appeals to donate money in the aftermath of Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti to apply a critical eye and do their due diligence before responding to those requests. Past tragedies and natural disasters have prompted individuals with criminal intent to solicit contributions purportedly for a charitable organization and/or a good cause. Therefore, before making a donation of any kind, consumers should adhere to certain guidelines, to include the following:

  • Do not respond to any unsolicited (spam) incoming e-mails, including clicking links contained within those messages.
  • Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as surviving victims or officials asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites.
  • Verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations by utilizing various Internet-based resources that may assist in confirming the group’s existence and its nonprofit status rather than following a purported link to the site.
  • Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files because the files may contain viruses. Only open attachments from known senders.
  • Make contributions directly to known organizations rather than relying on others to make the donation on your behalf to ensure contributions are received and used for intended purposes.
  • Do not give your personal or financial information to anyone who solicits contributions: Providing such information may compromise your identity and make you vulnerable to identity theft.

Anyone who has received an e-mail referencing the above information or anyone who may have been a victim of this or a similar incident should notify the IC3 via www.ic3.gov.
