About Us

Since 1966, Catholic Charities Maine has dedicated itself to creating, administering, and advocating for programs and services that reach out and meet the critical human service needs of our state.

Our professionally trained staff and over 1,000 volunteers help individuals from birth through old age overcome obstacles in their lives that threaten their self-sufficiency. Last year, we provided services to over 40,000 individuals in Maine, and touched the lives of countless others through our advocacy and convening efforts. While some of the people we serve are Catholic, many are not. Some can afford to pay for the services they receive, but most cannot. Our agency attempts to help all who request assistance either through direct assistance or appropriate referral.

Mission

Catholic Charities Maine is an organization of the Diocese of Portland that actualizes the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church. We are a community of conscience that witnesses to the healing ministry of Jesus Christ by providing services, advocacy, education and spirituality to people of all faiths and beliefs who are most vulnerable, poor, or disenfranchised.

Catholic Charities Maine is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children, Inc.

As a member agency of United Way organizations throughout Maine, Catholic Charities Maine works to identify community concerns and provide programs and services to address needs in the locations it serves.

Catholic Charities Maine is a member of Catholic Charities USA. The national organization provides leadership, advocacy and technical assistance to 1,640 independent local agencies and organizations across the United States.

As stated in our mission, Catholic Charities Maine's roots are in its Catholic tradition. Our programs serve as the social service affiliation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, which supports many of our community faith-based services.
