Independent Support Services/Homemaker Services



Catholic Charities Maine has provided homemaker services since its inception in 1967. This is a service that is central to Catholic Charities Maine’s mission and values.

Independent Support Services provides homemaking services to allow elderly clients, disabled individuals, and families in crisis to remain in their homes. Also helps families needing support with parenting skills and child rearing. Services include grocery shopping, laundry and errands, light house cleaning, household management, emotional support, parenting skills, and occasional respite care.

Home and Family Service providers are professionally supervised para-professionals. They are trained to assist with a variety of in-home needs, and they receive specialized, in-service training.

Assistance is available for:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Laundry and errands
  • Menu planning and food preparation
  • Light housekeeping
  • Emotional support
  • Parenting Skills training
  • Teaching activities of daily living to disabled individuals

How to Request Assistance

Telephone referrals may be made by the individual in need, family members, or other community based agencies. Home and Family Services may be available at no charge for people meeting eligibility guidelines. For others a co-payment is required.
