Spotlight on Service:

ClaudineClaudine
Donations Processer
Portland Thrift Store

A couple months ago, we sat down with Claudine, a stellar Portland Thrift Store volunteer, to learn more about her experience. Claudine has since moved away from Maine but was willing to let us share her story with you.

Volunteer Services (VS): How did you become interested in volunteering at the store?
Volunteering for Catholic Charities in general was the initial draw for me, because I’m Catholic, and I wanted to give back to the community. I asked where I could be helpful and was directed to the Thrift Store.

VS: What is your favorite part of volunteering at the Thrift Store?
I love the good vibe of the store. When I come in here, I’m immediately in a good mood. The staff, the volunteers, and the patrons are all amazing. Also, the stuff for sale here is awesome! People donate some great antiques and furniture. There is also a woman who donates beautiful, hand-made knitted hats. It’s so kind – you realize just how good people are when they make something special just to donate to the store.

VS: What do you do during a typical afternoon at the store?
I do whatever is needed when I’m here. I help with processing donations, putting things out on the floor, whatever is needed that day. I like that I’m able to multi-task, and it’s never boring.

VS: What have you gained from the experience?
I’ve learned how to barb clothing items and about the pricing scales for clothes and other items. I had worked in retail once before, but the Thrift Store is completely different! Volunteering here has also allowed me to meet lots of cool people, including volunteers of all ages and from all over the world.
