Portland, ME – Catholic Charities Maine today announced it has been awarded a one-year grant totaling $32,000 by United Way of York County. This investment will benefit its St. Louis Child Development Center and Independent Support Services programs. Through the mobilization of resources, expertise, and funds that support programs focused on education, income and health – the building blocks of a good life, United Way of York County advances the common good and strengthens the whole community.
St. Louis Child Development Center has provided daycare in York County for more than 30 years and prides itself on an environment that fosters creativity, curiosity, collaboration and compassion. An NAEYC accredited and step four rated facility (Maine’s highest rating) the grant will enable St Louis to help support services to low-income families who deserve and need a high-quality child care to make a difference in their child’s life. “In addition, these funds will allow us to track individual progress of each child and prepare them with the school-readiness skills needed for future success,” said Center Director Todd Winship.
The Catholic Charities Maine Independent Services Support program provides in-home assistance to low income elders and adults with disability in all of York County’s communities. Services provided by homemakers include house cleaning and home management tasks, meal preparation, shopping and errands, and transportation to appointments. Consumers must meet financial and medical/functional eligibility criteria established for state supported long term care services. According to Don Harden, program director this grant will assist seniors in York County to live independently in their own homes preventing institutional care at a savings of $138 a day.
Thanks to the continued support of many dedicated individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout York County, this year, the United Way is investing in 78 community programs serving children, youth, adults and families.
“Despite economic uncertainty in 2010, local people gave very generously to our United Way community campaign,” said United Way of York County President and CEO Kathryn Davis. “As a result, in 2011 we are able to provide much needed support for essential human services across the region.”
