New Mainers’ Day Welcomes Recent Refugees and Asylee Families to Portland

Portland, ME – Catholic Charities Maine Refugee and Immigration Services and the University of Southern Maine are hosting “New Mainers' Day,” an event to welcome refugee and asylee families who have arrived within the past year to Portland. The goal of the event is for refugee families to meet one another, to meet community members and to learn more about USM’s programs. The event includes ethnic food prepared by Take Action Portland and the RIS Mentoring Program and features activities for kids, music, and informational tours for refugees interested in USM.

WHERE: USM Portland Campus Green (in front of the Office of Community & Service Learning) Rain location: The Sullivan Recreation & Fitness Complex, 66 Falmouth Street, USM Portland Campus

HOW: This event is free and open to the public.

Since 1975, Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services (RIS) has been the primary provider of resettlement services to refugees in Maine. Our staff works with new arrivals to access housing, English classes, employment, medical and mental health services, and other such basic needs that will allow them to begin a new life and become an active part of the community.
