Immigration Legal Services (ILS) volunteers provide direct immigration legal representation before US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). They help clients apply for green cards, US citizenship, and family reunification. Volunteers file immigration benefit applications and represent clients at USCIS interviews. They also respond to requests for evidence. they also assist with department of state immigrant visa processes. ILS does not represent clients before immigration court. Immigration law training, supervision, and malpractice insurance are provided on an ongoing basis.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide legal consultations to clients using professional interpreters.
Prepare complex immigration legal forms.
Represent clients at USCIS interviews.
Meet critical deadlines, document case progress and activities using legal case management software.

Catholic Charities Maine is one of only three US Department of Justice Recognized Organizations in Maine. Our RIS Immigration Legal Services team provides low cost immigration legal services to low income refugees & asylees and immigrants throughout Maine. We serve families fleeing persecution, helping them improve their immigration status and integrate into their new communities.
Qualifications & Skills Required:
An active bar license in any state or retired Maine attorneys willing to pursue Emeritus status. A copy of the bar card or proof of active law license is required at Volunteer Services before starting.
Willing to learn. Excellent communication skills and client-centered approach to direct service. Must be dependable.
Detail-oriented, highly organized, and comfortable with complex instructions & forms preparation.
Proficient with typing and digital case management software. Language skills are a plus.
Training Offered
Comprehensive immigration law trainings; regular supervision; access to case consultations with expert national immigration attorneys.
Time Commitment/Schedule
Long term commitment of at least 10 hours per week preferred. Must be available to attend weekly team meetings on Tuesday morning (remote or hybrid is acceptable).
