Working as a Home Helper

Just two hours a week can mean a world of difference to a neighbor in need of a helping hand

Are you already volunteering an hour or two to help a loved one or neighbor with chores around the home or running errands?

With Self-Directed Help at Home, an eligible senior can hire you as their Home Helper, paying a minimum of $13 per hour, 2 hours per week (rates vary by location)

Enjoy the benefits and rewards of being a Home Helper

  • help out a loved one, neighbor, or acquaintance
  • enjoy maximum flexibility and independence
  • schedule your time directly with your client
  • get paid for up to 10 hours of work a month.

If you have 2 hours a week to spare, you can be compensated for your time — and be the lifeline someone needs to remain independent in their own home.

As a dedicated Home Helper, you will be doing so much more than just helping a loved one or a neighbor with a few chores — you’ll be allowing them to retain their dignity and independence, while giving their family the peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe and supported.

In return, you’ll enjoy maximum flexibility and the opportunity to meet new people and develop meaningful relationships. From there, the rewards are limitless!

How does it work?

Home Helpers provide an average of two hours a week of support with household tasks, including:

  • vacuuming
  • mopping,
  • changing linens
  • laundry
  • taking out the trash
  • cleaning the kitchen and bath
  • grocery shopping
  • meal prep
  • and more.

The pay is $13/hour (or more at the discretion of the client). These positions offer great flexibility while providing steady support for a person in need.

As a Home Helper you will be employed and paid directly by the person you serve (who is then eligible to receive reimbursements for their Help at Home services by submitting documentation of hours to Catholic Charities Maine).

Self-Directed Home Helpers must be at least 17 years old and pass background checks.
