Dr. Florence Edwards Joins Catholic Charities Maine’s Jessie Albert Dental & Orthodontic Center in Bath

November 20, 2022

Portland, ME - Dr. Florence S. Edwards has joined the dental care team at Catholic Charities Maine’s Jessie Albert Dental & Orthodontic Center in Bath.

Florence (Flo) Edwards moved with her parents to Maine from New York when she was 12. After graduating from Portland High School, Dr. Edwards received a degree from Lake Forest College in Chicago. She returned to Maine, and while working with Portland Adult Education and Spurwink, she realized that helping people smile was her passion. She earned her dental degree at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and joined the U.S. Army as a captain. Being away from Maine made her miss her community and all the outdoor activities the area offers, so once her Army service was complete, she and her wife moved to Maine.

Dr. Edwards has been a dentist since 2009. She received a Gold Star Champion award from Maine’s Breathe Easy campaign for promoting awareness about the impact of menthol flavored cigarettes and e-cigarettes on gums and oral health (https://youtu.be/zzywRXYu1r0) in 2021.

Dr. Edwards is active in the community and volunteers as a board member of The Third Place (https://www.thethirdplace.me) and Equality Maine (https://www.equalitymaine.org ).

About the Jessie Albert Dental & Orthodontic Center

The Center is named for Jessie Albert, a community Vista volunteer and mother of six who worked tirelessly to provide affordable dental care to the community. In 1971, under the sponsorship of Catholic Charities Maine, the Jessie Albert Memorial Dental Center opened in a railroad station donated by Bath Iron Works. More than 1,200 children were served the first year, and the center continued to expand over the next three decades, adding Orthodontic care and moving to the current location at Congress Avenue in Bath.
